Sporadic Tweeting

I've been tweeting a bit at @SpacePrizes.  That might become a low-level substitute for my roundup posts here.  Roundups can take quite a while by the time I've read articles, written a roundup post, and formatted it, but an occasional tweet is a lot easier.  I do have some ideas for non-roundup posts that I may or may not get around to.

I'm still quite busy.  I've done a lot of thinking and research about what I'd like to do if I switch to a new job.  I actively looked into a small number of possibilities, and that went well.  I've even thought about some career ideas somewhat related to space prizes, but those haven't gelled into anything that would feed my family, let alone support my ambition to take daily SS2 flights.  Most of my job ideas are for fairly traditional jobs.  At the moment it looks like I might wind up staying at what I'm doing now after all, but most of my team has already dispersed and that could easily change again.  I've been fixing things up around the house in case I end up needing to move, which has taken lots of time since I've been putting off a lot of house maintenance ever since my first kid arrived on the scene.  I'm also taking a class that might change some career options for me. 

Side Panel Overhaul

This is just an administrative post letting you know I've just done an overhaul of the side panel links for the Space Prizes blog.  I probably changed more than half of the links.  Some are new additions, some old ones are removed, and dozens were just updated because the prize or team sites are still there, but have been reorganized.

2011 Tether Challenge

I'm still here, although I haven't posted in weeks.  I now have a daughter, and that means less frequent posting, especially while I have lots of visitors on extended trips to meet her.

Twitter Management

In recent months I've found myself swamped scanning various twitter accounts for prize news. My first attempt to solve this was a page full of twitter accounts, but clicking each one was too time-consuming. Only a few would have updates on a given day, so I needed a method to just get the updates, preferably organized by theme. I tried some twitter widgets within blogger (on the right here and here). These have been helpful, but they seem to have refresh limitations. I also tried some canned twitter searches, and these are also proving to be helpful. For example, for the X PRIZE Foundation, I have

These solve the problems with the widgets, but I'm not completely happy with these, either. First, I would rather have 1 Google Lunar X PRIZE search, not 3, but there's a 140 character limitation to twitter searches. Another issue is that it seems like Twitter Search doesn't do what I would intuitively expect it to do. For example, let's say I go to twitter and look up "GoZeroG" or "pkhomer":

For pkhomer, I see updates from a couple weeks ago, and for GoZeroG, I see updates from a few hours ago. However, when I use Twitter Search:

I get "No results for from:gozerog" and the same for pkhomer. It seems to happen for some accounts, and not others. I'm sure there's some esoteric but rational reason for this, but it's not what I want. That's why I was interested in the follow tweet from Doug Comstock from NASA IPP, the organization that, among other things, runs Centennial Challenges on the NASA side:

Apparently "Twitter Lists" is a new feature that is being rolled out. See Hands-on with Twitter Lists - CNet News. I'm looking forward to trying this new feature, and hoping it solves the various problems I've encountered with my patchwork of twitter management attempts.

For the NASA prize winners list, and just sticking with Centennial Challenges, I'd probably use @pkhomer, since that twitter account seems to be the active one for Peter Homer. I'd also include @armadillogadget. For Masten, I'd probably be torn between using @mastenspace and the whole Masten team (which, as far as I know, means adding @mojaverocketguy, @wikkit, @colinake, and @mmealling to Dave Masten's account above).

A Pause

I have a number of family events going on this week, so I probably won't be posting, or even getting on a computer, much at all. I took a quick skim of Space Transport News (RLV News), and I see plenty of prize news over there (a newly registered Google Lunar X PRIZE team Selenokhod, lots of Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge updates, and more).

Armadillo Lunar Lander Weekend

This may be the Space Prizes blog, and this is a big Space Prize weekend for the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, but there's no way with dad activities I can keep you up to date with the action as reported by The Launch Pad (numerous posts), Cosmic Log, RLV News (numerous posts), News Scientist, and others.  Check out those links for the background and latest news on the attempt.  It looks like it's happening right now in a break in the weather.  The Launch Pad also notes many twitter accounts that are active and at the site in this post.  I have many of these accounts in the "Space Prizes Tweets" on the right side panel here - but you only get the most recent couple posts from each account, the panel takes a while to pop up, and it doesn't like refreshes (and with this event to keep up to date you will want to refresh).

Note: I also just added unrocket (Unreasonable Rocket twitter) to both the twitter list and tweet panel.

Twitter Admin

I started a new blog Space Prizes Twitter to help me keep up with that medium. I don't plan to treat it like a regular blog. The main point at the moment appears on the right side panel - a widget to show tweets from some space prize twitter accounts.  I did something similar for some other space twitter accounts on a blog I haven't updated in a while, Space Applications.  The most recent tweets are on the top, but each account gets a fixed number of entries.  Note: the widget seems to have trouble for a while after being used a couple times.  That's tolerable for my anticipated use, but it may make it useless for you. We'll see how it goes.

I also put the Twitter List on the new blog; I expect to only keep that one up to date, rather than the old Twitter List post on the Space Prizes blog.

What was I doing during that long break in posting? I took a week off to visit family. Most of it didn't concern prizes, but to some extent one day did. You can see more about that day here:

The Next Few Days

I'll be travelling for a few days, so posting will be light, or perhaps stopped. I do expect to do some swimming, but I won't be at the shore depicted by this Panoramio honorable mention from March. The link includes all of the winners from that month, and as usual you can expand the pictures or drill down to the satellite/air photo imagery in Google Earth or Google Maps to see where they were taken. By the way, this one was not taken from the surface of Titan.

Unreasonable FAR Plans

I'm going to have visitors for the next few days, so it's likely that I won't be posting, or that posting will be lighter than usual.

Going to FAR - Unreasonable Rocket - I don't think it would be going too far to say a lot of interesting things are planned for this trip. For starters, it's always good to see teams doing customer work as they try to win competitions.

Heinlein Nexus

I was at the Heinlein Centennial 2 years ago. In addition to Heinlein's work, this event featured prizes and space businesses. I just got an email on the 2 year anniversary of that date (07/07/07). The email promoted the Heinlein Nexus.

CSF submits policy paper to Augustine panel - RLV News - The main focus is on commercial transportation for ISS including crew. Here are some excerpts related to prizes:
