NSS ad Astra on 2007 Space Settlement Art Contest

Another article in the summer 2007 ad Astra I want to mention is one on the NSS Space Settlement Art Contest (earlier post here). You can see the art on the link I provided, but it's one thing to see it on a computer screen, and another to see it in print (especially the winner which gets a 2-page presentation in the magazine). As I said in the previous post, you can get ad Astra to see what I mean. In this case, according to the article, you can also see some of the pieces if you get the NSS Space Settlement 2008 calendar.

National Space Society 2009 Space Settlement Art Contest

During a bit of web surfing done while writing my previous post, I noticed that the National Space Society is holding the Space Settlement 2009 Calendar Art Contest. That link is just the flyer; here are the rules and prizes. Hopefully this becomes a long-term annual contest.

The rules sound similar to what I remember from last year's contest. There will be 12 winners whose artwork will appear in the 2009 calendar. The contest is divided by subject matter: orbital, asteroid, Moon, and Mars settlements. In addition to the main prize, which is having their artwork appear in the calendar and on the NSS website, the winners get cash, copies of the calendar, and other space and art prizes like software, paid memberships, and signed books.

The contest deadline is December 31, 2007!

Heinlein Centennial - National Space Society

George Whitesides from the National Space Society and George Howard from the Heartland of America Chapter of the NSS had a space advocacy presentation at the Heinlein Centennial. I can't report on this talk too much, because I missed a great deal of it because of some confusion on my part with session titles and schedule changes. They discussed a number of space-related activities that the NSS has that everyone, even those without Aerospace Engineering graduate degrees, can get involved with. As I tend to do (because of this blog, not because they're more important than the others) I tended to take notes on the ones involving prizes or awards:

Space Settlement Art Contest - which they discussed as a possible annual competition. They showed how the winning art looks in the calendar, too.

Space Settlement Student Design Contest

The Moon-Mars Blitz, advocating the NSS's space priorities to Congress, including Centennial Challenges - They would like to do this again in the Fall.

They gave a lot more information on the NSS and the local chapter, and had a discussion with audience members (and it seemed from their comments like some were NSS members, but others were more involved with SF and were interested in learning about space advocacy) about their ideas on what NSS should be concentrating on.

Peter Hodges has a post from the point of view of Generation X on this NSS seminar.

National Space Society New Moonth

It's April ... I'd intended to post a winning picture from the 2009 National Space Society Space Settlement Art Calendar contest at the beginning of each month, but I haven't remembered to do that, even though I've remembered to flip the calendar on my wall. This month's picture featuring thriving Martian vegetation is appropriate given the recent news of Odyssey Moon's intention to bring a flower to the Moon.

While discussing the National Space Society, I should mention the NSS Gerard K. O'Neill Memorial Award, which this year goes to Peter Kokh. From the main NSS page:

The National Space Society Awards Committee is pleased to announce that longtime space movement activist and editor of the Moon Miners’ Manifesto, Peter Kokh, is the winner of the 2009 Gerard K. O’Neill Award for Space Settlement Advocacy. Peter was the co-founder (in 1986) and is current president of the Lunar Reclamation Society (NSS Chapter) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also currently president of the Moon Society, an NSS affiliate organization. He is the editor and principal writer for the Moon Miners' Manifesto, which has been published monthly continuously since December, 1986, which is now up to issue 222 in its 23rd year of publication, and which is the longest running printed pro-space publication of its type. Peter has also previously served on the NSS Board of Directors and was chair of the International Space Development Conference held in Milwaukee in 1998. He is currently a member of the NSS Board of Advisors, and maintains an extensive web site for his chapter.

Heinlein Business Plan Competition
Finalists Selected for the Heinlein NewSpace Business Plan Competition - As I mentioned in an earlier post, this includes teams in, or with history in, other space prize competitions. I mentioned Flagsuit, LLC and Next Giant Leap. I didn't mention Aeronautic Enterprises because I didn't know about them, but this should give a hint:

http://teamprometheus.org/movies/2009/07/prometheus-makes-finals.html -

Aeronautic Enterprises/ Team Prometheus made the finals of the New Space Fronter Foundations Business Plan competition ... We will be launching a large rocket on the 11th and I will go to the NASA AMES Reasearch center for the New Space Convention 2009 on the 16th ...

Let's Hope for Next Year

I took down my 2008 National Space Society Space Settlement Calendar and replaced it with my 2009 one. I took a look to see what's happening for 2010, but according to the NSS Contests page, it's not happening this time:

2009 Space Settlement Calendar Art Contest

I recently posted about the National Space Society 2009 Space Settlement Calendar Art Contest. I thought I would post it again because I noticed that a couple days ago the NSS wrote a news item for the contest. The NSS site also have prominent image links to the 2008 Calendar (to buy ... again holiday gifts come to mind) and the 2009 contest (to compete in - it ends Dec 31, 2007).

One link I don't remember seeing before (maybe it's new - I don't know) is one showing the gallery of art accepted into the contest.

The NSS also has a number of other recent news items. Some of them will be covered here ASAP. Others don't belong on this blog, but they nonetheless deserve to be read, so check out the recent items at NSS.

National Space Society Space Art contest

I got a mass email from the NSS (NSS Downlink Issue #68) that describes an NSS Space Art contest. The theme is space settlements, divided by location (orbit, asteroids, Moon, and Mars). There are 12 prizes of varying levels, including cash, software, suborbital launch of a small object, and having the art published in the 2008 NSS Space Settlement Calendar.

Active NSS Blog

The National Space Society Blog looks like it's pretty active. Here's a post by Jim Plaxco on Space Art, NASA, and NSS that features the NSS Space Settlement Calendar Art Contests.

The picture, just in time for Valentine's Day this Saturday, is called "Lover's Lookout". It's the February image for the 2009 calendar.

NSS Art Contests

Space for All posts on the winners of the NSS Return to Luna story contest and the availability of the NSS 2009 Space Settlement Calendar, also the result of a contest. I actually picked up a copy of the calendar in May at the ISDC, and the 2008 calendar is right in front of me.

The Lunar Greenhouse

While I'm featuring images, I'll show the May picture on the NSS Space Settlement 2009 Calendar Art Contest. It goes well with Odyssey Moon's Google Lunar X PRIZE plans.
