Annual Moonbuggy Race Results

Space for All links to the results of the 15th Great Moonbuggy Race. I guess the real lunar rovers never had to deal with flooded craters.

One of the NASA Centennial Challenges proposed in a batch of 6 ideas was a "lunar ATV". I wonder if it would help the Centennial Challenges funding prospects if the lunar ATV were specified as one of the Challenges to be funded, and the lunar ATV demonstration or contest was required to be held in conjunction with the Great Moonbuggy Race? Holding these 2 together or near each other in space and time would, I suspect, help both events in terms of publicity and fun.

Not only fun, but funding, might be helped. The Moonbuggy Race is held by the MSFC in Alabama. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby is the ranking minority member of the Committe on Appropriations subcommitte that deals with NASA.

Since one never knows who will win a Centennial Challenge, it seems wise to at least occasionally specify that Centennial Challenge events (contests, meetings, etc) be held at politically important locations to bring business to these areas.

NASA's 14th Great Moonbuggy Race

Spaceref has posted an article about an annual student moonbuggy race that will be held this Friday and Saturday at Huntsville. NASA MSFC is organizing the race with help from Northrop Grumman and a number of other sponsors. You can find out more details about past moonbuggy races, sponsors, and rules here. Prizes (not specified as far as I could see) are awarded in divisions for high schools and colleges (3 in each division, plus a number of awards in special categories like moonbuggy design).

Registration Open for 2008 Great Moonbuggy Race

The Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium announces that it's time for competitors to register for the 2008 NASA Great Moonbuggy Race. This race is in its 15th year. It features human powered "Moonbuggies." (I don't know if that's how you spell the plural, but I like it that way). There are high school and college level competitions. I have more links on last year's Moonbuggy Race here.

Would it make sense to hold some kind of "lunar" human-powered or robotic race like this in conjunction with another space event like next year's X PRIZE Cup?

The Praxis Inc Battle of the Rockets - Spring Competition is scheduled for April 4, 2009 in Culpeper, Virginia. The categories are the "Mars Lander" CanSat-like competition, and an altitude competition.

NASA will select the winning name, based on a student's essay and the public poll, and announce the name in April.

UK Space Conference 2009

On top of Space Access, the Moonbuggy Race, the Conrad Award Innovation Summit, and the Atlantic VEX Regional Robotics Championship, this weekend also includes the last day of the UKSC 2009 (UK Space Conference). This NASA funded program, which is managed by Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU), provides a year-round virtual conference platform where students from across the country can participate in free interactive educational sessions of their choosing. Many of the sessions will focus on competitions found within NASA’s Centennial Challenges program ... students will also learn how to complete in other NASA sponsored competitions created specifically for Universities including: the Fundamental Aeronautics Student Competition for Colleges/Universities, The NASA University Student Launch Initiative, University Business Plan Contest for Engineering Technology, and the Great Moonbuggy Race.
